Janet, I am flummoxed that THE DEVOTION OF SUSPECT X, Keigo Higashino (Minotaur)is considered a first novel. Naoko, published in English in the US in 2004 by Vertical Inc would surely rule that definition out?

How do the Barry Awards define a debut, Janet? Do you know?

I'll check with George on this. The Barry Awards are nominated by readers of Deadly Pleasures.

Congratulations to all nominees. I just want to chime in that I think Turn of Mind by Alice LaPlante (nominated for best first) is an amazing book--beautifully written. I've been recommending it left and right.
