I have just about decided to avoid any book calling itself a "thriller." That's the area of the genre that seems to provide the most gore to wallow in. And often the least character development.Janet LaPierrenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1443515033089669860.post-4695244143396657252012-01-17T01:48:36.207-08:002012-01-17T01:48:36.207-08:00Agree totally with that. A mystery can be told without blood and gore, no gratuitous violence, no lurid descriptions of sexual violence against women, etc.

Rex Stout's Nero Wolfe mysteries have stood the test of time without that. Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti series has very little of that.

And there are a lot more without it.

I grew up reading mysteries, thinking it was about the puzzle, the whodunnit. Nowadays, I still like that genre and look for books without much gore, and where the descriptions of violence are kept to a minimum and the body counts aren't piling up.kathy d.noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1443515033089669860.post-52331635155821096392012-01-16T14:29:46.488-08:002012-01-16T14:29:46.488-08:00I am a fan of Janet's books and keep hoping fo...I am a fan of Janet's books and keep hoping for a new one. I agree with her about the Dragon books. The first one wasn't particularly well written. Haven't read the other two. But I also agree that mysteries are becoming more and more gruesome. Too often, over the years, I have heard writers say, "the violence is necessary for the story." I strongly disagree. One can write a thoroughly engaging mystery without inventing more and more disgusting ways of torture.vallerosehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00823261062528849703noreply@blogger.com
