A Night at the Movies: Crime Movies

With the Oscar Awards coming up tomorrow night, I thought I'd revisit the Top 100 Crime Movies of All Time, according to the Masters in Criminal Justice website.  I chose one or two examples from each category. The full list appears on their site.  Of course, this list doesn't include most of the fabulous Noir films.. but that's another list. What movies would you add?

Gangster/Mafia: The Godfather

Superhero: Superman

Cybercrime and Technology: The Matrix

Police Dramas: Dirty Harry, The French Connection

Political and War Crimes: Shindler's List, Judgment at Nuremberg

Drugs: Traffic, Scarface

Gambling: Casino Royale, Oceans 11

Child Crimes: Notes on a Scandal, Taxi Driver

Westerns: No Country for Old Men, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Other, including murder plots, serial killers & other grisly tales: The Silence of the Lambs, Dial M for Murder, Psycho

Social Commentary: To Kill a Mockingbird

Mysteries & Detective Movies: Deal on the Nile, Rear Window, Citizen Kane

Blackmail, Revenge & Corruption: Charade, L.A. Confidential

Robbery & Heist: Bonnie & Clyde, Reservoir Dogs

International: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Other: The Bourne Identity, A Clockwork Orange

Go HERE for the complete list. What films would you add?

  1. Hard to believe Chinatown isn't on this list; it's a classic noir mystery film and won an Academy Award for best original screenplay.

  2. I missed your comment about the list not including the classic noir films, but I'm not sure I'd include Chinatown among those. I think Chinatown is more of a suspenseful whodunit with noir overtones. Regardless, it is — in my opinion, of course — one of the best crime films of the late 20th century.

  3. Janet,
I'd add some Comic/Farce crime films to the list, like the Pink Panther series, and Foul Play.
