It's Map Back Monday, but today's Dell Map Back is A.A. Fair's Fools Die on Friday. A.A. Fair is the pseudonym that Erle Stanley Gardner used for his Cool and Lam series (Bertha Cool and Donald Lam). This is #11 in that series, and was first published in 1947. Read a review by Francis M. Nevins that appeared in Mystery*File.
I remember discovering A. A. Fair in a used bookstore xx-years ago. On subsequent visits I bought every one I could find. This cover art makes me think I'd better check some boxes in my attic to see if I missed one!
ReplyDeleteYou've depicted the more sought-after of the two states of the cover art for this particular mapback. The other one has the redheaded lady a bit less unbuttoned and unzipped -- the second state, after they received complaints, I gather. The second state is numbered 1542 but I understand it's at about the same time period as 542.
ReplyDeleteThanks for giving A.A. Fair some attention; I think these books deserve more readers than they've had lately!
Thanks, Noah, for your comments. I did think this was a pretty racy cover.. LOL
ReplyDeleteI have copies of some of the AA Fair but hadn't seen this one! Like Perry Mason, these are fun (and very quick) reads!
