PROFESSOR T, Season 4 News

So many new seasons of great British TV that I forgot to post that Professor T, Season 4, episode 1 aired last Sunday, August 24, on PBS. You can watch the entire season PBS Passport or other PBS related places -- or watch when it's aired (although you may have missed the first episode). I like this series a lot, and I'm looking forward to bingeing Season 4 over the holiday weekend!

And somehow I missed that Season 4 dropped even earlier on PBS Passport: August 10!! I'll try to be more diligent in the future--for you and for me.

Set against the academic backdrop of Cambridge, Professor T stars Ben Miller as the brilliant but eccentric criminologist Jasper Tempest, whose insights into human behavior help solve the UK’s trickiest cases—even as he struggles with his own. If you’re already a fan, you know to expect sharp wit, psychological twists. If you haven't seen this how, you might want to catch up on the first three seasons.

After Season 3’s shocking finale, Dan and Jasper are consumed by grief. Dan throws himself into work whilst the professor hides in his lectures, avoiding the police at all costs. But Helena, Jasper’s therapist, helps him face his police work and the team tackle some complex and dangerous cases. Even through the danger and mystery, love is very much in the air.

The Marlow Murder Club News: PBS Masterpiece

Good News. Season 2 of The Marlow Murder Club premieres on Masterpiece PBS on Sunday, August 24 at 9/8c with writer, creator and Executive Producer Robert Thorogood joining forces with Lucia Haynes (Annika, Vera) and Julia Gilbert (Ridley, Midsomer Murders) for six all-new episodes.

While life in the idyllic town of Marlow has just about returned to normal after a chain of murders rattled the tightly knit community, it’s not long before retired archaeologist Judith Potts, dog-walker Suzie Harris, and Vicar’s wife Becks Starling are called back into action to solve a series of new crimes that befall the local residents. From a seemingly impossible murder inside the locked study of a sweeping mansion to the mysterious case of a man with no connection to the town murdered in the middle of a sleepy cul-de-sac, and an unexpectedly brutal accident at the prestigious Marlow sailing club that quickly reveals itself to be something more sinister, there’s no rest for our sleuthing trio. Navigating the delicate balance of Marlow society—from local aristocracy to the workers at the local boatyard, the pubs and cafes of the high street to a newly established archaeological dig—Judith, Becks, and Suzie dig into all corners of Marlow life as they assist DCI Tanika Malik in her official investigations.

MAIGRET: New TV series on PBS

MASTERPIECE on PBS has announced that Maigret, a contemporary series, will premiere on Sunday, October 5, 2025 at 9/8c on PBS. The first trailer for the brand-new series has been released in conjunction with the news. Scroll to watch the trailer, and scroll down for a short history of Maigret on TV and film.

Writer and EP Patrick Harbinson  has taken the Georges Simenon detective stories and updated them into a contemporary show starring Benjamin Wainwright as the detective Jules Maigret. The Maigret novels are the second best-selling detective series ever, behind only Sherlock Holmes and this is the first modern-day adaptation for the screen.

Maigret inhabits a vividly realized Paris that takes us from the glitzy upper-class world of luxury hotels and mansions to local bourgeois bistros and bars and the underground haunts of the professionally criminal. “To understand and not to judge”: Maigret strives above all to unravel  motivations. He is good at this not because he is a genius, or has special methods, but because he listens – he doesn’t solve crimes so much as he solves people.

Patrick Harbinson's adaptation reframes Maigret as an unconventional young detective with something to prove, a rising star in the Police Judiciare, relentless in his investigations, with an uncanny ability to get under the skin of the criminals he is chasing and a matchless knowledge of Paris and its inhabitants.

I haven't seen the series yet, but my main question is where is Madame Maigret? She is one of my favorite characters in the Simenon books. It doesn't look like she's in this new series which is about the 'young' Maigret. I guess we won't be seeing all those mouth-watering French meals. Other questions: Where is Maigret's crumpled trenchcoat, pipe, and hat? Perhaps he acquired them later in his life?

Since this series debuts in October, you have plenty of time to get reading. The Simeon Maigret mysteries are short and easy to read. And, there are 75 novels and 28 short stories, so lots to read.

FYI: There have been over 35 actors that have played Maigret. French film adaptations began in 1932, but Jean Gabin was the first 'well-known' French actor playing the role in 1958, 59, and 63. French actors Jean Richard and Bruno Cremer followed with Jean Richard appearing in 90 episodes.

On British TV, Rupert Davies starred in the role in the 1960s (more than 50 episodes). In the early 1990s, Michael Gambon solved 12 crimes. I loved this series, and I thought Gambon was the perfect Maigret. But, the first actor in the Uk to play Maigret was Charles Laughton in the 1949 film The Man on the Eiffel Tower. I think the most recent Maigret series on TV starred Rowan Atkins in 2016 and 2017. Several of these series are streaming.

PROFESSOR T RENEWED FOR SEASON 5

In case you missed this news, I thought I'd post. I really like Professor T with Ben Miller. News is that the show will return with Ben Miller in the title role for a fifth season of the hit detective series Professor T. And this is even before season 4 has aired!

The series, based on a Belgian drama (available on a streaming service), follows the genius Cambridge criminologist Professor Jasper Tempest as be solves an assortment of crimes while also dealing with his rather over-bearing mother, played by Frances de la Tour. Season 4 is set to air later in the year, but fans will be delighted to know that further episodes have already been greenlit.

In addition to Miller and de la Tour, the new season will include Zoe Wanamaker as the Professor’s aunt, Zelda Radclyffe, and Juliet Stevenson as psychologist Dr Helena Goldberg. Other cast members will be back, too.

Can't wait. In the U.S. Professor T airs on PBS.

MARBLE HALL MURDERS: MASTERPIECE PBS

MASTERPIECE on PBS
announced the commissioning of Marble Hall Murders, an adaptation of the third and final installment in best-selling novelist Anthony Horowitz’s Susan Ryeland series. This is a follow-up to the critically acclaimed Magpie Murders and Moonflower Murders, which premiered on MASTERPIECE in 2022 and 2024, respectively. Lesley Manville (The Crown, Phantom Thread) and Tim McMullan (The Crown, Patrick Melrose) will reprise their roles.

Anthony Horowitz said: “I’m so happy to bring the team back – stars, director, producers and crew – for a third instalment of what has been a fantastically successful TV series. I have a feeling this could be the best yet.”

This series sees Lesley Manville (The Crown, Phantom Thread) return as Susan Ryeland, a book editor who all too often finds herself involved in baffling murders. Returning to England, she is reluctantly drawn into a new Atticus Pünd mystery, this time written by a new, young writer. “Pünd’s Last Case” is a story set in 1955, in an exotic villa in Corfu – but the identity of a real killer is hidden in the book and once again Susan is going to find herself in grave danger.

Tim McMullan (Patrick Melrose, The Crown) reprises his role as Atticus Pünd, the literary detective who steps out of the books to help Susan unravel the real-life mystery. Who killed Miriam Crace, the most famous children's author in the world?

The series will begin filming in March in Dublin, Corfu and London. Additional cast to be announced at a later date. Marble Hall Murders is a co-production of Eleventh Hour Films for MASTERPIECE and the BBC in association with Salt Films, and distributed worldwide by Sony Pictures Television and by PBS Distribution in North America.

SISTER BONIFACE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL 2024

The Sister Boniface 2024 Christmas Special: "Once Upon a Time"
premieres on Britbox on December 17. I love all these Christmas specials. They're usually the first episode of the next season. So look for Season 4 of the Sister Boniface Mysteries in early 2025.

Don't have Britbox? The Sister Boniface Mysteries, Seasons 1-3, will be available on PBS, on December 16, but not this Christmas special.

Pantomime season in Great Slaughter takes a deadly turn when a cast member of the Great Slaughter Amateur Dramatics Society is mysteriously killed during rehearsals. Sister Boniface (Lorna Watson) steps in to solve the case as the local constabulary join the production of Cinderella. But can she unravel the mystery in time to save both lives and the town’s much-anticipated Christmas pantomime?

LUCY WORSLEY’S HOLMES VS. DOYLE - PBS

LUCY WORSLEY’S HOLMES VS. DOYLE
: a three-part series featuring the popular British historian and lifelong Sherlock Holmes fan who seeks to answer why author Arthur Conan Doyle came to despise the character that made him rich and famous.

Throughout the series, Worsley explores the parallel lives of Doyle and Holmes in the historical context of their times. From the dying years of Victorian England, through the imperial crisis of the Boer war, the optimism of the early Edwardian years, to the trauma of the First World War, Arthur and Sherlock lived through them all.

LUCY WORSLEY’S HOLMES VS. DOYLE premieres Sundays, December 8-22, 2024, 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET (check local listings) on PBS, PBS.org and the PBS App.

Featured in over 60 original stories and countless film and television adaptions, Sherlock Holmes has intrigued and excited fans with his intellect and powers of deduction for more than a century. Over the course of three episodes, Worsley investigates the curious relationship between detective and author.

In Episode 1, “Doctor and Detective” (December 8), Lucy unearths Holmes’ origins in Doyle’s early life as a medical student in Edinburgh. She unpacks the early stories, revealing the dark underbelly of late Victorian Britain, from drug use to true crime. She explores how Doyle infused his stories with cutting-edge technological developments and traces the author’s growing disenchantment with his detective, heading to Switzerland to visit the site of one of the most famous deaths in literature.

In Episode 2, “Fact and Fiction” (December 15), Lucy explores Doyle’s desire to distance himself from Sherlock after the detective’s apparent death at the Reichenbach Falls. From the delights of the ski slopes to the horrors of the Boer War, she reveals how far Doyle went to make himself the hero of his own story. He even took on the role of detective himself in one of the most important legal cases of the 20th century.

In the finale, “Shadows and Sleuths” (December 22), Lucy investigates the return of Sherlock. Doyle began the Edwardian age delighting in all it had to offer, but as the First World War approached, the darkness of the later stories mirrored the reality of Doyle’s life. After losing his eldest son, he became an evangelist for spiritualism, and his star declined after a public spat with a famous magician. Sherlock Holmes, in contrast, found a life beyond his author on stage and screen.

LUCY WORSLEY’S HOLMES VS. DOYLE will stream simultaneously with broadcast and be available on all station-branded PBS platforms, including PBS.org and the PBS app.

Georges Simenon's MAIGRET: PBS MASTERPIECE NEWS & MORE

MASTERPIECE PBS is co-producing a new detective series - Maigret.

MASTERPIECE Head of Scripted Content and Executive Producer Susanne Simpson said: “Maigret will be a perfect addition to MASTERPIECE’s line up of Mystery! shows. Our partners at Playground have assembled an incredible cast and creative team, and our audience is going to love Inspector Maigret and his unique style of crime solving.”

This is the first contemporary television adaptation of Georges Simenon’s novels about the streetwise Parisian Chief Inspector Jules Maigret. Production has started production in Budapest. Colin Callender and David Stern will executive produce for Playground, the Golden Globe and BAFTA award winning production company behind upcoming series Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light and All Creatures Great and Small, both for MASTERPIECE.

Jules Maigret will be played by Benjamin Wainwright (Belgravia: The Next Chapter, Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim), and Stefanie Martini (The Gold, Last Kingdom, Emerald City) stars as his wife Madame Louise MaigretPatrick Harbinson (Homeland, 24, The Tower) serves as lead writer and executive producer and will direct the first two episodes of the series.

The Jules Maigret series is the second best-selling detective series ever, behind only Sherlock Holmes.

“To understand and not to judge”: Maigret strives above all to unravel our motivations. He is good at this not because he is a genius, or has special methods, but because he listens – he doesn’t solve crimes so much as he solves people.

I'm looking forward to the new Maigret series.

***

Maigret has appeared numerous times on the screen, with at least thirty-four actors assuming the role at different times. The long list of film adaptations began in 1932, two years after Maigret was created, with the release of two films.

Some of the actors who portrayed Maigret: Michael Gabon, Rowan Atkinson, Gérard Depardieu, Bruno Cremer, and Jean Richard.

Though Simenon's books have been adapted many times for film and television, Rupert Davies's celebrated, BAFTA-winning portrayal won the approval of Simenon himself, who stated: At last, I have found the perfect Maigret! Running to 52 episodes, this complete 1960s series has been remastered in High Definition from original film elements and is featured now on MHz in its original full screen TV format.

Read J. Madison Davis's article on The Faces of Maigret, here

While you're waiting for what will be a great PBS Masterpiece series have a look at some of the other portrayals of Maigret, of which many are available to stream.

Or, start reading Simenon's mysteries. They are wonderful!

What are LARDY CAKES? Grantchester, Season 9, and a Recipe!

Are you a Grantchester fan? Grantchester,  now in its 9th season on Masterpiece Mystery! - PBS, is a British Mystery Series. If you've been watching Season 9, you may have been baffled by Mrs. C's mention of selling Lardy Cakes for the Church fundraiser in Episode 4. Lardy Cakes are not common on this side of the Pond. I had heard of them because they were a bake on the Great British Bake-Off one season, but I've never made them. So I did some digging.

Lardy Cakes
date back to mid-nineteenth
century England and, simply put, lard is used instead of butter to enrich a white dough. The dough is sweetened, spiced, and filled with dried fruit, then rolled out and dotted with lard. Next, it’s folded or rolled so that while baking, it forms distinct, flaky layers. Once you know lard actually has less saturated fat than butter, you realize this cake just has a branding problem!

According to the Great British Bake-Off, where I first heard of Lardy Cakes, the Lardy Cake bake is a cross between a Danish pastry and a bread. As mentioned above, it combines sugar, lard, butter, and fruit, and it's a British Classic.

So maybe you want to make a Lardy Cake to accompany your viewing of the next episodes of Grantchester? Here's Paul Hollywood's recipe from Series 14 of the Great British Bake-Off. Glad I wasn't a contestant on that episode. You can't go wrong with Paul Hollywood --and Grantchester!

LARDY CAKES

Ingredients

1 1/2 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 cup warm water, plus more if needed
1 pinch white sugar
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons lard, divided
6 tablespoons butter
1/2 cup sultana raisins
1/2 cup dried currants
1/4 cup thin strips of orange zest
1/4 cup white sugar

Directions

Sprinkle yeast into warm water, then add a pinch of sugar. Let stand until frothy, about 15 minutes.

Combine flour and salt in a bowl. Cut in 1 tablespoon lard with two knives or pastry blender. Make a well in the center and pour in yeast mixture. Beat with an electric mixer until a dough forms and starts to pull away cleanly from the sides of the bowl, adding more warm water if necessary. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Place into a clean bowl and cover with a clean tea towel. Leave in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.

Turn risen dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to a 1/4-inch-thick rectangle. Dot 1/3 of the remaining lard over the surface, then sprinkle with 1/3 each of the raisins, currants, orange zest, and sugar. Fold the bottom third of the dough up, fold the top third down, then give the dough a quarter turn on the work surface. Repeat the process twice more, starting with the rolling.

Grease an 8x10-inch pan with lard and butter.

Roll out the layered dough to fit and place into the pan. Cover and leave in a warm place until puffy, about 30 minutes.

Score the top in a criss-cross pattern with a knife.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F. Bake in the preheated oven until well risen and golden brown, about 30 (+) minutes. You want a nice golden color, but you don't want the fruit to burn or the the centre to be raw.

Remove from the oven and serve immediately or leave to cool on a wire rack.
