possibly the best, across-the-board, shortlist for the main award in many a year? A very, very strong year - and it will be interesting to see who emerges as the winner(s).

Coptown by Karin Slaughter is a murder mystery which shows how male police treated police women and women in general in the 70s. Very strong book.

Janet, the Mancall Ellroy volume is published by McFarland, not Oxford UP (I'm the editor of the series).

I pad my future read pile with names from this list, I look forward to it every year. Reading a great mystery right now by Nancy Boyarsky called The Swap, really good I recommend. Now to get started on a few from this list!!
