MONSIEUR SPADE NOW STREAMING ON ACORN

NOW STREAMING:  Monsieur Spade, a limited series starring Clive Owen as the iconic Dashiell Hammett PI Sam Spade,is now streaming on AMC, AMC+ and Acorn.  

Spade is a retired ex-pat in the 1960s. Monsieur Spade has six episodes, each running  40-60 minutes. It premieres  today, January 14, 2024 with new episodes streaming weekly on Sundays, at 9 pm ET/PT, on AMC, AMC+, and Acorn TV, until its finale on February 18, 2024.

Dashiell Hammett’s Sam Spade remains one of the most popular American sleuths of the 20th century. This famous private eye makes his first television appearance in AMC’s Monsieur Spade. Set in 1963, the plot follows the famous private detective during his retirement days in the tranquil French community of Bozouls. But the return of an old adversary and the murders of six nuns in the town spoils his serene life. 

Monsieur Spade is based on the detective created by Hammett and his novels. Monsieur Spade is created, written, and executive produced by Emmy-winning Scott Frank of The Queen’s Gambit fame and Tom Fontana from City on a Hill. Monsieur Spade was shot in France.

January is certainly shaping up for good TV viewing. I'm looking forward to Monsieur Spade, a limited series starring Clive Owen as the iconic Dashiell Hammett PI Sam Spade, once played by Humphrey Bogart. in this series, Spade is a retired ex-pat in the 1960s. Monsieur Spade has six episodes, each running  40-60 minutes. DARK WINDS: Second Season news

The second season of the AMC series Dark Winds will premiere July 30 on both AMC and AMC+.

According to Anne Hillerman, daughter of Tony Hillerman, on whose series the show is based, will have six episodes.

“I’m excited to see the shows,” Hillerman writes. “I have really enjoyed this re-envisioning of my dad’s novels.”

Set in 1971 on a remote outpost of the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley, Utah, Dark Winds follows Lt. Joe Leaphorn of the Tribal Police as he is besieged by a series of seemingly unrelated crimes. The closer he digs to the truth, the more he exposes the wounds of his past. He is joined on this journey by his new deputy, Jim Chee. Chee, too, has old scores to settle from his youth on the reservation. Zahn McClarnon and Kiowa Gordon bring Leaphorn and Chee to life in the series, alongside Jessica Matten, who brings Bernadette Manuelito to the screen and Noah Emmerich as FBI Special Agent Whitover, Deanna Allison as Joe’s wife Emma Leaphorn, and features Rainn Wilson as Devoted Dan, a full-of-faith car salesman.

The series is directed by Chris Eyre and produced by Robert Redford, George R.R. Martin and Vince Calandra.

Anne Hillerman has continued the Leaphorn/Chee/Manuelito series. The eighth book, The Way of the Bear, is the most recent.

ACORN TV: CANNES CONFIDENTIAL

AMC streamer Acorn TV has unveiled its second original in the space of a week, boarding the crime drama Cannes Confidential.

Penned by Midsomer Murders and Van der Valk writer Chris Murray, the eight-part series is a romantic procedural that blends comedy, mystery and crime detection with a heart-warming love story — all against the backdrop of the Cote d’Azur.

Deadline first revealed that Murray — who has also written for Acorn series Agatha Raisin — was working on the project through Dramacorp, the Stockholm-based production company founded by Patrick Nebout, part of Jan Mojto’s Beta Film. Maria Ward (Agatha Raisin) is co-writing the series. Acorn Media Enterprises is co-producing.

Acorn is billing Cannes Confidential as the first English-language procedural drama to be produced and set on the Cote d’Azur since the 1970s action-adventure comedy The Persuaders, starring Roger Moore and Tony Curtis. Production will begin in Cannes in early 2021.

“With its engaging, blue sky script and beautiful setting, Cannes Confidential is the kind of program the world could use right now and is sure to entertain Acorn TV subscribers worldwide,” said Catherine Mackin, managing director of Acorn Media Enterprises.

Dramacorp COO Nebout added: “Chris Murray has a genius for creating deeply loved and witty characters and stories that run and run. The setting of Cannes Confidential is upbeat, colourful and spectacular, the wittiness is there, yet Chris and Maria are developing multi-layered main characters and strong emotional arcs, taking the procedural genre into a more elevated and romantic direction.”
Nebout executive produces alongside Henrik Jansson-Schweizer. The series will premiere on Acorn TV in North America, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK next year.

John le Carré's The Night Manager Comes to U.S.

At last! The miniseries of John le Carré's The Night Manager will be coming to the U.S. on AMC, beginning April 19.  Just an FYI: The new production (there has been a movie) updates the story to the present and changes a main character's gender.

The Night Manager is a six-part miniseries premiering on Tuesday, April 19, is a contemporary interpretation of John le Carré’s best-selling spy novel, which follows hotel manager Jonathan Pine (Tom Hiddleston) in his quest to bring down international arms dealer Richard Roper (Hugh Laurie). Pine, a former soldier, is thrust into a world of international intrigue when he is recruited by a British intelligence officer (Olivia Colman) to infiltrate Roper’s inner circle. To get to the heart of Roper’s vast empire, Pine must withstand the allure of his beautiful girlfriend Jed (Elizabeth Debicki) and the suspicious interrogations of his venal chief of staff Major Corkoran (Tom Hollander). In his quest to do the right thing, Pine must first become a criminal himself.
