Art Detectives: New Series on AcornTV

I love a good art mystery, and I'm looking forward to Art Detectives that starts today on AcornTV. Two episodes are now available, with future episode streaming one a week.

In the Metropolitan Police's smallest department, the Heritage Crime Unit, an art-loving detective tackles cases connected to the world of art, antiques, collectibles and cultural heritage. Stephen Moyer remains best known in America for his vampire Bill Compton in True Blood. Moyer returns today, June 9, with AcornTV’s murder mysteries series Art Detectives as art-loving Detective Inspector Mick Palmer, partnered with Detective Constable Shazia Malik (Nina Singh). They’re the Heritage Crime Unit, solving murders linked to art and antiques – everything from forged paintings to Viking gold.

“I loved the idea of it,” the British born Moyer, 55, began in a Zoom interview with the Boston Herald. “There is a real Heritage Crime Unit – I think it’s called the Art Fraud Department. It’s the smallest department in the whole Metropolitan Police. Just three people. Alongside straight-talking DC Shazia Malik, played by Nina Singh, the pair solve murders connected to the world of art and antiques, from Old Master paintings, to Banksy street art, medieval manuscripts and collectible vinyl. in the series, the artfully astute detectives encounter a fake Vermeer, Viking gold, a rare Chinese vase and items rescued from the Titanic.

Palmer navigates these cases while managing a budding romance with museum curator Rosa, played by Sarah Alexander and the sudden reappearance of his charismatic father, Ron, (Larry Lamb), who just happens to be one of Britain’s most notorious forgers.

Art Detectives' first two episodes stream today on Acorn TV.

Don't miss the Season 3 Christmas Special on Acorn TV (technically, the First Episode of Season 3). It aired in December 2024 and is still available on AcornTV).

A REMARKABLE PLACE TO DIE: New Zealand mystery series on AcornTV

A Remarkable Place to Die is a new series on AcornTV that really showcases the remarkable scenery. It's also a good solid mystery with an excellent storyline, as well as solid acting.

Detective Anais Mallory returns to her hometown (ok, this is a trope) in Queenstown, New Zealand, and faces startling homicides. And in true mystery trope manner, it concerns her past and past crimes.

She lands at the airport in her hometown of Queenstown, a resort town set against The Remarkables, a mountain range in New Zealand. At the same time, that SUV goes over the edge, tumbling and crashing as it heads to the bottom. The body in the driver’s seat looks like he’s already unconscious or dead.

Anais has been a homicide detective in Sydney. Although she's taken a job as a detective sergeant at the local police department, she's also there to help her mother, two years after the death of her younger sister Lynne, and four years after her father died. Lynne died much the same way as the man in the SUV did, going over the edge into Skipper’s Canyon.

Each of the 4 episodes is 90 minutes and is a complete story, something I always appreciate, especially if the streaming service is dropping one a week. Rebecca Gibney is in this series as the still-grieving mother. I love her in everything, including Under the Vines, also on Acorn right now. Under the Vines is also set in New Zealand.

THE MADAME BLANC CHRISTMAS SPECIAL

I'm behind on The Madame Blanc mysteries, but I will definitely give the Christmas special a look. I do like lighter fare every once in a while, so I plan to catch up on this series, and it is set in France, after all. There have been 3 Seasons so far, and Season 4 is scheduled for 2025. Madame Blanc is on AcornTV.

The Christmas Special for The Madame Blanc Mysteries will air on AcornTV on December 20 in the U.S.

The Madame Blanc Mysteries is a crime drama series created by and starring Sally Lindsay as antiques dealer Jean White. The show follows Jean as she investigates her husband's death and encounters the colorful locals in the fictional French town of Sainte Victoire.

THE CHELSEA DETECTIVE SEASON 3 NEWS!

Well this is good news! I've been waiting for the return of The Chelsea Detective, one of my favorite detective shows. Acorn TV has announced that the Christmas episode, starring Adrian Scarborough, will drop on December 16. This special will also serve as the start of Season 3, which will be comprised of four 90 minute episodes that will continue into 2025. (Not enough, but I'll take them!)

Also reprising their roles in Season 3 are Peter Bankolé (DI Ray, Bodkin) as DC Connor Pollock, Lucy Phelps (Grace) as DC Jess Lombard, Sophie Stone (Shetland) as Chief Forensics Officer Ashley Wilton, and Frances Barber (Whitstable Pearl) as Max’s Aunt Olivia.

DALGLIESH, SEASON 3 News!

DALGLIESH, SEASON 3, PREMIERES MONDAY, DECEMBER 2, ON ACORN TV

I'm looking forward to series 3.

The six-episode season includes three two-part stories: Death in Holy Orders, Cover Her Face, and Devices and Desires. Each story is based on a novel by the Queen of Crime, British author P.D. James.

Dalgliesh Season 3 starts on Acorn TV on December 2. Detective Adam Dalgliesh, played by Bertie Carvel, is back to solve complicated crimes in England in the 1970s, ranging from a murder in a seminary to a plot to attack a terrorist target.

New cast members and well-known ones, like Carlyss Peer’s Kate Miskin, join him.

INSPECTOR ELLIS: New series

I really enjoyed Episode 1 of Inspector Ellis, a new series, on AcornTV. Put it on your list. Great acting, interesting plot, new twist. 3 Episodes (1 1/2 each), being dropped weekly. Hope there's a Season 2 in the future.

Acorn TV’s new three-part series Inspector Ellis (Ellis in the UK) challenges our preconceptions of a female detective. DCI Ellis (Sharon D Clarke) is a Black woman, no longer young, whose long black coat and brightly colored scarf are a statement of strength and power. She is neither pleasingly eccentric nor eager to reveal a softer side, although we know she has an estranged daughter. She is not to be messed with. Her toughness and tenacity make her the ideal candidate for a new position; a senior officer sent to handle cases that have stumped the local team.

CANDICE RENOIR OCTOBER SPECIALS

I really like Candice Renoir, the French police show. I'm so caught up in the characters, not to mention the scenery and plots. AcornTV has brought us all 10 seasons, and on Monday, October 28th, AcornTV, two Candice Renoir specials (Corsica & Halloween) will drop. These two specials make up what was previously billed in France as Season 11, although it's only two full length programs. Hopefully, we'll see more 'specials' in the future, but I wouldn't count on it.

Spoilers in descriptions. Read at your own peril.

Candice Renoir Corsica Special - Acorn TV Exclusive
Following their non-proposal, Candice and Antoine go on a honeymoon in Corsica. They spent their savings on a dream stay in a luxurious hotel on a beach with turquoise waters. During dinner, a man notices Candice in her pretty flowered dress and her bright laugh - but perhaps the attention is a little too much? Antoine gets into a fight with a man he thinks is a flirt, and the couple spends the night apart, deciding to go home. But the next day, the pseudo flirt is found dead in the trunk of the car.

Candice Renoir Halloween Special - Acorn TV Exclusive
Now a financial investigator, Candice is bored out of her mind. With Halloween approaching, she accompanies Antoine to pick pumpkins on a farm with his daughter, Suzanne. Attracted by a marmalade shop run by a witch, Candice forgets to watch over Suzanne and, a few seconds later, the child is kidnapped by Jack O' Lantern, the scarecrow from the field. There are numerous tracks but Candice, frustrated to no longer be a field investigator, can only act in secret.

Candice Renoir: Season 10 News!

I'm a big fan of Candice Renoir, the French TV mystery series, starring Cecile Bois. AcornTV has the first nine seasons, and if you watched the final episode of Season 9 (currently available), you know it ended with a cliff-hanger. Well, good news. You won't have long to wait for Season 10. Season 10 will start on AcornTV on September 16, 2024. FYI: There are 11 seasons, and we should have access to Season 11 in the near future.

Not familiar with the series? Well, you have a treat in store. Currently AcornTV is airing the first 9 seasons. Start with the first series. Enjoy!

CANDICE RENOIR: SEASON 9 NEWS!

At last! Candice Renoir, Season 9: July 22 to AcornTV. 10 Episodes. (In French with subtitles) I love this show.

Candice has been hiding Antoine's amnesia, but she's been caught out. She's no longer allowed to take part in any investigations and is told to either end her relationship with Antoine or be transferred to another part of France.

Seasons 1-8 are still available on AcornTV.

MIDSOMER MURDERS, SEASON 24, starts today!

Just a Reminder: Midsomer Murders, Season 24 Starts Today!!! Enjoy. Alas, only 4 episodes.

I love Midsomer Murders, and I confess that I've seen the entire series at least twice, probably more. Midsomer Murders is a quirky series with  imaginative murder scenes and weapons. If that sounds dark, I will tell you it isn't. I think of this series as one of the best mystery series on TV..not gritty, not scary.. just great acting, lovely scenery, and plots. Of course, I wouldn't want to live in the county of Midsomer. Way too many murders for my taste. It's  Cabot Cove on steroids.

Midsomer Murders, Season 24, premieres on AcornTV on December 4.

Midsomer Murders is one of the longest-running mysteries currently still airing. It first aired in 1997 (first with John Nettles as DCI Tom Barnaby, then with Neil Dudgeon as DCI John Barnaby). The series is based on Caroline Graham's Chief Inspector Barnaby novels. The series is set in the fictional Midsomer County, and follows two different DCI Barnabys as they solve quirky murders occurring in lovely small villages. It's mystery 'lite',  and the murders often require some suspension of disbelief. I'm o.k. with that.

CANDICE RENOIR, Season 8, premieres on AcornTV

CANDICE RENOIR, SEASON 8, DECEMBER 11 on
AcornTV. I'm so glad that Season 8 is dropping so soon after Season 7. Can the other seasons be far behind?

There are 10 seasons and a feature length special of Candice RenoirIf you haven't seen this series before, or if you just want to rewatch, AcornTV has the first 7 seasons here.

I love this series about French police detective Candice Renoir.  Cécile Bois stars as Candice Renoir, a mother of four who took a decade-long hiatus from her role as a Parisian police detective to accompany her husband on job assignments around the world. Newly divorced, she returns to the force while also learning to manage as a single mother. She’s out of practice and her new colleagues find her maternal ways and love of pink a bit annoying – but she’s a clever detective with a strong drive for justice, and she’ll eventually win them around. They often call her Barbie. Lots of relationships, crime, setting, and justice in this fast paced French series.

There are 10 episodes in Season 8. Candice Renoir is in French with subtitles.

Candice Renoir: Season 6

I really enjoy the French TV series Candice Renoir. It features Candice Renoir (Cecile Bois), a French policewoman and single mother of four. I find Candice charming, but don't get me wrong, there's a lot of policing and action, too. Candice Renoir solves complex cases with common sense and acute observations. Season 5 really ratched it up in terms of tv creativity. I also enjoy (and am invested in) the full group of auxiliary characters in this show.

It was a long wait for season 5, especially after the shocking final episode in Season 4 (all 5 seasons are available on AcornTV), but now Season 6 will drop on April 17 on AcornTV). 10 episodes, in French, with subtitles. Looking forward to it!
