ANNIKA: PBS MASTERPIECE

PBS MASTERPIECE announced that it will present Annika starring Nicola Walker (UnforgottenLast Tango in Halifax). Walker plays DI Annika Strandhed, the dry-witted, speedboat-driving head of Glasgow’s newly-formed Marine Homicide Unit, who juggles baffling cases and a rebellious teenage daughter.

Annika’s six episodes will have a special premiere on PBS Passport, an added member benefit which provides extended access to a digital, on-demand library of PBS programs, and on the PBS MASTERPIECE Prime Video Channel on April 17, 2022. The series will have a television broadcast on MASTERPIECE in Fall 2022.

While other TV detectives discuss the case exclusively with their team, Annika addresses viewers directly, “breaking the fourth wall” that separates the action from the audience. “With most characters there is so much subtext,” notes Walker. “But there is no subtext with Annika because the subtext is her talking directly to you and telling you what she feels. By the end, we are going to know her as well as she knows herself.”

Annika draws on the popular radio drama Annika Stranded, which aired on BBC Radio 4 between 2013 and 2020. Walker was the one-woman star of that series, with scripts by Nick Walker (no relation). The two Walkers have now teamed up again to bring Annika to television in all her complexity, vulnerability, and eccentric affability.

The Men of Mystery: Endeavor & Grantchester Coming soon to Masterpiece!

Coming soon to Masterpiece! on PBS: New seasons of Endeavor and Grantchester!

Endeavour, Season 6, premieres Sunday, June 16, 2019, 9/8c on MASTERPIECE on PBS.
Shaun Evans charms audiences with his portrayal of the cerebral and solitary Detective Constable Morse in Endeavour, written by Inspector Lewis creator and Inspector Morse writer Russell Lewis.

In Endeavour, Season 6, Shaun Evans has a new look as DS Endeavour Morse. The latest installment of Endeavour is set in 1969. Evans will also be putting his directorial mark on the show, heading behind the camera for the second 90-minute episode of the season. Endeavour will also be facing new challenges, with Morse having started a new role as a uniformed officer at the Woodstock police department and embracing the fashion of the period by growing a mustache. Alongside Evans, the new series will see celebrated stage and screen actor Roger Allam return as DI Fred Thursday, alongside Anton Lesser as CS Reginald Bright, Sean Rigby as DS Jim Strange, James Bradshaw as Dr Max DeBryn, Sara Vickers as Joan Thursday, Abigail Thaw as Dorothea Frazil and Caroline O’Neill as Win Thursday. Following the dissolution of the Oxford City Police and the merging with Thames Valley Constabulary at the end of the last season, the new season picks up with the team dispersed as they find their feet in their various new roles.

Grantchester Season 4 premieres Sunday, July 14, 2019, 9/8c on MASTERPIECE on PBS.

Grantchester returns to MASTERPIECE with a new vicar: Tom Brittney (Outlander, Call the Midwife) who joins the cast of Season 4 as Reverend Will Davenport — man of the people and crime-solving partner to Robson Green’s Geordie Keating in 1950s Grantchester. James Norton, who plays the charismatic, jazz-loving clergyman Sidney Chambers, makes his final appearance during the series. Confident, caring and self-assured, Grantchester’s new young parish priest channels his boundless energy into a quest for social justice. He is a man of God, but with the devil inside of him. As Geordie draws him into righting the wrongs of criminal Cambridge, Will’s own troubled past is unearthed. About his character, Brittney says, “Will has a very strong moral compass with a thirst to change things, but underneath, there is a dark and troubled past that drives him in what he does.”

ENDEAVOR SEASON 5: PBS Masterpiece starts June 24

Endeavour returns to PBS Masterpiece Mystery! for Season 5 on June 24! For the first time in the history of the series, there will be six full-length episodes.

The new season begins with Morse having finally passed his Sergeant’s exams just as Oxford City Police merges into Thames Valley Constabulary creating uncertainty for everyone at Cowley CID.

“Many of the global tensions of that most turbulent year, 1968, have found their way into our six new Endeavour mysteries,” said series creator and writer Russell Lewis. “1967’s Summer of Love seems already a distant memory. Dark clouds are gathering at home and abroad as, after almost 100 years, the long history of Oxford City Police comes to an end. A terrible storm is set to blow through the professional and personal lives of newly promoted Detective Sergeant Endeavour Morse and Oxford’s finest, leaving devastation in its wake.”

I've seen the first two episodes and really enjoyed them. They're definitely full of puzzles that the mystery viewer will appreciate. Great period sets, costumes, and themes.
