Not really surprising. I came of age during that time and, in so many ways, women were not viewed as 'serious' human beings then. This ad would have been viewed as hilarious. If a woman complained she would be accused of not being able to take a 'joke'. I mean, lighten' up. That sort of thing. Men didn't get it.
