Congratulations, Barb Goffman, winner of the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine Readers Award Poll.

It's my honor and deep pleasure to share the results of this year's Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine Readers award poll. Every year, the magazine asks its reader to nominate their favorite three stories published in the magazine that year. Yesterday, this year's results were released, and my story "Dear Emily Etiquette" took top honors, coming in first place. This is an honor I really never thought I'd achieve. It was only in 2017, after years of submissions, that Janet Hutchings accepted a story from me, and I've only had two more accepted since then, including DEE. So when she emailed to tell me I'd won, I truly was stunned. Happy. Ecstatic. And stunned.

Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine 2018 READERS AWARD

ElleryQueen Mystery Magazine Readers Award 2018

Stacy Woodson has won first place with her story “Duty, Honor, Hammett” from the November/December 2018 issue’s Department of First Stories. EQMM readers enjoyed the way the D.C.-based U.S. Army veteran combined a military setting, a suspenseful plot, and some crime-fiction history in her first professionally published tale. Stacy is also the winner of the 2017 Daphne du Maurier Award for Best Romantic Suspense in the single title, unpublished category. She contributes to Publishers Weekly and her short fiction can be found in a handful of upcoming anthologies.

Second place is Virginia translator, writer, editor, and instructor Josh Pachter, whose winning story “50” (from the November/December 2018 issue) marks a special occasion: the half-century anniversary of his first fiction publication (in our Department of First Stories), an event that occurred when he was still a teenager and made him the second-youngest author to be published in EQMM. The tale, a classical whodunit, brings back the characters from that original story and gives a nod to Ellery Queen. Josh is the editor of The Misadventures of Ellery Queen (Wildside Press) among other titles.

In third place is retired New Jersey police chief David Dean with his chilling “Sofee,” about a child seeking justice for a friend (from the March/April 2018 issue). David is a prolific short-story writer whose work has received nominations for almost all of the major mystery awards, including the Edgar. He is also a novelist (see The Thirteenth Child, The Purple Robe, and Starvation Cay), and a previous EQMM Readers Award winner (for “Ibrahim’s Eyes” in 2007).

2017 EQMM READERS AWARD WINNERS

2017 EQMM Readers Award! Congrats to all!

Brendan DuBois has taken first place with his story “Flowing Waters,” a timely and poignant tale of a veteran and her dog from our January/February 2017 issue. The New Hampshire native got his start in EQMM’s Department of First Stories in 1986. Since then he has produced 165 published short stories and nearly two dozen novels, as well as collaborated on books by New York Times best-selling author James Patterson. He’s a Shamus Award winner and an Edgar, Macavity, and International Thriller Award nominee.

Doug Allyn rings in second place with his story “Tombstone” (November/December 2017), which combines the lore of the Old West with modern filmmaking intrigue. The author, who hails from Michigan, has won more Readers Awards than any other writer. He’s also a multiple Edgar Award winner in the short-story category, and the author of a number of well-received novels, several of which had their genesis in his stories for EQMM.

In third place is Dave Zeltserman with a new entry in his Shamus and Derringer Award winning Julius Katz and Archie series (a Nero Wolfe homage): “Cramer in Trouble,” from the March/April issue. Before beginning this series—stories from which have twice before won EQMM Readers Awards—Dave Zeltserman was known primarily for noir fiction. He is the author of Small Crimes (now a Netflix Original movie) and the Morris Brick series (written under the pseudonym Jacob Stone).
