George Baker, who starred as Chief Inspector Wexford in TV's The Ruth Rendell Mysteries, died of pneumonia at the age of 80.
Although Wexford was probably his most famous role, Baker's six-decade career covered a wide range of roles, including comedy, drama, soap operas and science fiction.
He appeared in The Dam Busters and the TV series I, Claudius, and his name was once even suggested for the role of James Bond.
His daughter Ellie Baker told the BBC: 'He absolutely loved Wexford and he loved being Wexford... and he loved the whole thing. It was a joy to him.'

That's sad news. He was great as Wexford.
All right enough already. First Anna Massey, Anne Margaret Tyzack and now George Baker. He was terrific as Tiberius in I, Claudius. I've only seen a few of the Wexfords and wish that all would finally be released here.
